Reform of state and of a free market and a sustainable democracy - United States priorities in Romania
ACTMedia - 6 Iulie 2011
Reform of the state and of a free market and a sustainable democracy are high priorities for the United States, because they ensure we have a reliable and stable strategic ally and trading partner in Romania.
That is why these reforms are so important for President Traian Basescu and President Barack Obama, stated the Ambassador of the United States of America to Romania, Mark Gitenstein, in his remarks delivered on the occasion of the celebration of Independence Day, at the reception on Monday evening.
'Last year at this podium I spoke of these common values and my concern about a certain pessimism, sometimes even a cynicism, about the prospects for change and reform in Romania. I said this mentality is captured by the expression, 'Asta e Viata' - 'That's life'. From this podium, I contrasted 'Asta e Viata' with the spirit of 'Yes we can!' the spirit of Barack Obama. I am most gratified that in the past year I learned of scores of Romanians who embody this hopeful spirit', said Ambassador Gitenstein who singled out seven Romanians from the administration and civilian society who, through their actions, proved they have put their trust in the slogan 'Yes we can!'.
Those seven mentioned by the U.S. Ambassador are Anamaria Hancu and Liana Buzea who were part of the social campaign 'Let's Do It, Romania!' to literally clean up Romania, Laura Stefan, the anticorruption coordinator for the Romanian Academic Society, Raed Arafat, an Under Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Sergeant First Class Laurentiu Serban who overcame the loss of a leg when fighting in Afghanistan, Marcellus Suciu, who runs an extremely successful restaurant chain, and is involved in an environmentally friendly bike sharing program in Cluj (north-west of Bucharest) and actively promotes private charities to solve social issues for seriously ill children and the blind, Anca Harasim, the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bucharest.
'I am so optimistic as regards this country because there are other thousands of people the same as these six and they will not be defeated by cynicism and inertia of the adversaries of change. The Americans who risked their lives the same as Romanian revolutionaries did so so that we can enjoy the blessing of freedom. All we can do is to honor their sacrifice by being optimistic and determined', Ambassador Gitenstein also said.
Attending the event organized at the U.S. Ambassador's residence were Premier Emil Boc, Senate's President Mircea Geoana, Justice Minister Catalin Preodiu, Minister of Education Daniel Funeriu, Minister of Economy Ion Ariton, former presidents Ion Iliescu and Emil Constantinescu, Princess Margaret and Prince Radu, other personalities of public life and members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Bucharest. The reception was specially focused on the state of Hawaii, the guests being greeted with garlands of flowers, an artificial volcano was mounted in the Ambassador's residence garden and the traditional Hula Hula was danced by a young Hawaiian.
