Romania's population decreases by 5,578 people in May

Romania's population decreased by 5,578 people in May 2011 and by 7,410 people in April, with a negative population growth having been recorded, according to provisional data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Thus, in May, 15,800 children were born (8.7 liveborn infants per 1,000 people), by 1,956 more than in April, but the number of people who died in May stood at 21,378 (11.8 deaths per 1,000 people), by 124 deceased people more than in April.
Under these circumstances, population growth was negative both in May, with 5,578 people (the deceased people having a surplus versus liveborn infants), and in April, with 7,410 people.
According to INS, the number of children aged under one who died in May was 148 (9.4 children aged under one per 1,000 liveborn infants, a declining rate compared with April, when there were 10.8 children aged under one per 1,000 liveborn infants).
Versus May 2010, the number of liveborn infants was lower by 1,905, and the number of the people who died was lower by 154. The population growth continued to be negative in May 2011, with 5,578 people, the same as in May 2010, when it stood at 3,827 people. The number of children aged under one who died in May 2011 was lower by 13 versus May 2010.
