The net average salary of Bucharest is almost 30% higher than in Iasi, Timisoara and Cluj, but the cost of living in these towns is close to that of the capital city, says a study of the A.T.Kearney consultancy company regarding seven towns of Romania.
Bucharest has the highest average salary of 2,091 lei per month while the inhabitants of Iasi, Timisoara and Cluj earn 71 – 72% of the average salary of a Bucharest inhabitant. The ranking is kept in the case of purchasing power, but the percentages are slightly different, the six towns being closer to the average of Bucharest than in the case of salaries, due to the cost of living slightly reduced.
Thus, Bucharest has the highest cost of living in Romania, followed by Iasi (97.2% of the level of Bucharest), Cluj ( 94.3%) and Timisoara (91.9%). The analysis includes several categories of prices which cover products and services found in the daily basket of the population, with the exception of thermal energy which was included as tariffs depend on the subsidies offered by the local authorities.
As consumption categories, basic food, with a share of 35% of the daily basket costs more in Zalau and Calarasi ( over 6% over the prices in Bucharest) where there are the lowest salaries. In Iasi, food is on average 5.5% more expensive than in Bucharest and in Timisoara and Cluj they are 4.7 and 7.2 cheaper. The lowest prices for food were recorded in Ploiesti, representing 82.8% of the average in Bucharest.
Gas, electricity, fuel , auto service, phone and communication services, alcoholic beverages and tobacco have similar prices in the seven towns, but washing powder and personal hygiene products are more expensive in Cluj. Clothes have similar prices to those in Bucharest in Iasi, Timisoara, Cluj and Ploiesti. Cleaning services are 34% more expensive in Iasi and Cluj against Bucharest and 20% higher inTimisoara.
Food and beverages at restaurant/bars are cheaper in provincial towns than in Bucharest, with percentage varying between 20% and 40%. Public transport and taxi fares are 15-30% cheaper in Cluj, Iasi and Timisoara than in Bucharest and prices for fitness and theatre tickets have prices with 50% more reduced.
