Ambassador Henri Paul: Romania, France have very strong, very close ties
ACTMedia - 15 Iulie 2011
The ties linking Romania to France are very strong and very close, as there is an odd attraction uniting the two countries, which have been making up a tandem that is more than 130 years old, French Ambassador to Romania Henri Paul said in an address to a reception celebrating France's National Day on Thursday.
He explained that the reasons for such attraction of the Romanians to France rely on older historic moments, such as Napoleon III's involvement in the unification of the Romanian Principalities or the effort made by hero General Mathias Berthelot in favour of Romania in World War One.
The ambassador also cited more recent such events as France's maintaining the relations with Romania during the bleak times of fascism and communism so as to enable the numerous Romanians who went into exile to choose a second homeland.
'There is the long line of intellectuals, scientists, artists, philosophers and also of the common people born in Romania who chose to work, live and die in France, contributing to the creation of a common culture', he stressed.
Moreover, the French language has united the two nations for two centuries and even today it is being chosen to be studied by many Romanian students who are faithful to this centuries-long tradition, Paul underscored.
The ties between Romania and the French Republic are also being strengthened at present by the common fight waged in Afghanistan, with the ambassador recalling the six French soldiers who lost their lives in that country in the last two days as well as 19 Romanian servicemen who were killed in the operation theatre.
The French ambassador underlined that his country represents a fixed point, that defends values and opinions everywhere, even at the present time of a world shaken by crisis, by social changes difficult to understand and anticipate.
Such defence of values is proved by a range of actions recently taken by the French Embassy in Bucharest, namely presenting the Human Rights Award to a Romanian association fighting against human trafficking, the setting up of the French-Romanian Judges Association and supporting Parada Association that takes care of the homeless children, Henri Paul said.
