Romania's exports of agricultural products is approaching EUR 1 bn

Romania's exports of agricultural products in intra and extra community countries was close to one billion euros by the end of April 2011, the top revenues being dominated by corn, tobacco and sunflower seeds, according to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) .
If in the first four months of 2010 food products of 610.35 million euros went to export, in the same period of 2011 the exports totaled 947.3 million euros, representing an increase of 55 percent. Imports also recorded an increase in the first four months of the year, by 21 percent, their value amounting to 1.409 billion euros from 1.164 billion euros at the end of April 2010.
Export growth has contributed to a reduction of Romania's trade deficit in agricultural products, which fell by 16.4 percent in first four months of 2011, to 462.56 million euros. In the same period of 2010, Romania's trade deficit with food products totaled 553.78 million euros.
According to MADR data, the most exported product on intra and extra community markets was corn, which brought 175.6 million euros to Romania for 533,306 tons, from the same period in 2010 when 91.68 million euros were cashed for 443,331 tons. From exports of cigarettes, cigarillos and cigars - 6,182 tons - 117.1 million euros were cashed by the end of April 2011. They were the only products with added value in the top three, that went to external markets.
Also, raw materials ranked third in the exports top, namely sunflower seeds, which brought revenues of 123.05 million euros for a quantity of 229,970 tonnes. In the same period of 2010 about 97.491 tons of sunflower seeds were exported to intra and extra community markets, worth 39.5 million euros.
This year, grain exports were favorable to Romanian producers, as prices have increased significantly on the world market compared to last year.
As regards imports, fresh pork meat, refrigerated or frozen, was dethroned from the top three by sunflower seeds, being imported about 140,981 tons worth 85 million euros. Pork meat imports were in the value of 66.78 million euros for 43.256 tons in the first four months of 2011. Corn ranks third in the imports table, worth 65.66 million euros for 196.875 tons.
