Eurostat: Romania, third in EU in terms of construction works increase in May

Romania recorded in May 2011, compared to the previous month, the third largest increase in construction works in the European Union, in conditions in which, in the EU, the construction works volume decreased by 0.9 percent and in the euro area the volume of construction works decreased by 1.1 percent, according to data presented on Tuesday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).
At the EU level, eight states saw an increase in construction works in May 2011 compared to the previous month, while in five member countries construction works decreased. Largest increases were recorded in Hungary (6.5 percent), Poland (3.7 percent), Romania (2.9 percent), while the steepest declines were in Slovenia (minus 9.8 percent), The Netherlands (minus 2.3 percent) and Slovakia (minus 1.3 percent).
Annualized, in May 2011 compared with May 2010, the volume of construction works decreased by 1.9 percent in the euro area and by 1 percent in the EU. According to available data, the volume of construction works decreased in nine Member States (including Romania) and increased in five member countries. The steepest declines were recorded in Slovenia (minus 30.1 percent), Spain (minus 17.3 percent) and Bulgaria (minus 16.5 percent) and the highest increases in Poland (24.7 percent), Sweden (11.2 percent) and Germany (8 percent). Romania recorded a growth of 2.6 percent, Agerpres informs.
