Romania collects over EUR 224 mn from cereal exports in first four months of 2011

Romania collected 224.41 million euros from cereal exports in the first four months of 2011, witnessing an almost 60 percent increase compared with the same period of last year, when the exports' value stood at 142.32 million euros, according to the data sent by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
The cereals (wheat and meslin, barley, maize and rice) exported both to European Union member states and to countries outside the EU exceeded 731,601 tonnes, although in the similar period of last year 831,830 tonnes of cereals were placed on foreign markets.
Therefore, the maize exports brought Romania the highest earnings amounting to approximately 175.62 million euros for 533,306 tonnes and the wheat and meslin, about 33.72 million euros for 145,067 tonnes.
In addition, other 12.13 million euros were generated by the export of 53,114 tonnes of barley and 2.92 million euros for 8,106 tonnes of rice.On the other hand, Romania imported over 437,840 tonnes of cereals worth 140.03 million euros form the foreign market in the first four months of 2011, compared with 361,149 tonnes worth 68.143 million euros imported in the similar period of 2010.
According to the MADR data, maize occupied the first place in terms of imports, too, accounting for 196,875 tonnes worth 65.66 million euros, followed by wheat and meslin, with 189,048 tonnes worth 50.46 million euros, barley - 13,543 tonnes worth 7.55 million euros and rice - 38,224 tonnes worth 6.39 euros.
