UNCTAD report: Romania ranked 1st in region in terms of value of greenfield investment projects

Romania is ranked first in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of the value of greenfield investment projects, $5.204 billion in the first four months of 2011, according to the 2011 World Investment Report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Far behind Romania is Poland, with $3.13 billion, followed by Slovakia, $2.8 billion; Bulgaria, $2.15 billion; the Czech Republic, $1.76 billion and Hungary, $1.17 billion.Greenfield investments in the European Union in the same period totalled $47.329 billion. Ranked before Romania are the UK, with $7.21 billion and Germany, with $5.85 billion.
In terms of the number of greenfield projects attracted January-April 2011, Romania is second in Central and Eastern Europe, with 783 projects, behind Poland, with 89 projects.Following in the ranking are The Czech Republic - 67 projects; Hungary - 55; Slovakia - 35 and Bulgaria - 28.
In the EU, Romania falls behind the UK - 290 greenfield projects; Germany - 1243; Framce - 117 and Spain - 115.In Europe overall, there were 1,400 greenfield projects conducted in January-April 2011, 1,344 of which were carried out in the European Union. In 2010, Romania drew in 218 greenfield projects and 204 in 2009.
According to the same report, foreign direct investment in Romania stood at $3.573 billion in 2010, with the FDI stock standing at $70.012 billion.Global FDI increased by 5 percent in 2010, to $1,240 billion, which is 15 percent less than before the beginning of the economic downturn and 37 percent smaller than in 2007.
FDI flows in South-Eastern Europe dropped in 2010 for the third consecutive year, with the 47-percent decline being ascribed to sluggish investment from EU countries, traditionally the dominant source of FDI in this sub-region, says the UNCTAD report.
