Romania's investment-assigned GDP share - highest in EU, President says
ACTMedia - 3 August 2011
President Traian Basescu on Tuesday declared at the public radio station Romania Actualitati (News of the Day) that last year and this year too, Romania had the highest percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) assigned for investments of all European Union member states, adding that in his opinion, this area of activity is the engine that really powers the economy.
The head of state added that the average unemployment rate in the EU is 9.4 pct, whereas Romania's joblessness rate has been 7 pct in Q1 2011.
'These are exactly the issues I criticize the government for: too few concrete development measures [directed towards] investments. Such criticism is not just for the present day, but has a broader range. (...) Leaving aside the long list of measures, of steps aimed at stimulating employment, of guarantees for small-size businesses, so, leaving aside this long list, I can tell you that Romania has had last year and this year too the highest GDP percentage assigned for investments, the highest percentage in the EU, because this has been the government's policy: to create a minimum number of jobs, as good as it gets for the existing money,' said Basescu.
Speaking of investments, the President mentioned with 'irritation' the halt of the works on the Bucharest - Ploiesti (south) motorway for shortage of resources.
