Romania's public debt at 37.07% of GDP at end-May

At the end of May 2011, Romania's public debt stood at RON 200.663 billion (about EUR 47 billion), representing 37.02 pct of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up one percentage point from the end of April 2011, according to data published by the Ministry of Public Finance (MFP).
On December 31, 2010, Romania's public debt was RON 194.459 billion, standing at 37.86 pct of GDP. After the first five months of this year, the public government debt accounted for 94.25 pct of the total, whereas the local public debt - for 5.75 pct.
At the end of May 2011, 45.11 pct of the public government debt was denominated in RON and 44.66 pct thereof - in euros, 3.76 pct was denominated in US dollars. 1.19 pct - in Japanese yen and 5.28 pct in other currencies.
In a breakdown by financial instruments, the bulk of the debt was contracted through government loans (39.55 pct), Treasury bills (18.88 pct), state bonds (22.71 pct), Eurobonds - 5.34 pct, financial leasing - 0.03 pct, whereas loans taken out from the State Treasury General Account used for financing the state budget deficit represent 13.49 pct.
