Romania exports agricultural products in value of 1.19 billion euros, up 55pct in first five months

Romania's exports of agricultural products in intra and extra EU countries grew by almost 55 percent in first five months of 2011, exceeding 1.19 billion euros, according to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) to AGERPRES .

If in the first five months of 2010 food products in value of 769.84 million euros were exported, in the same period of 2011 exports totaled 1.190 billion euros. Imports also recorded an increase in the first five months of the year, but lower, of only 22.2 percent, their value amounting to 1.79 billion euros from 1.47 billion euros at the end of late May 2010. Export growth has also contributed to a reduction of Romania's agricultural products trade deficit, which fell by 13.3 percent in first five months of 2011, to 606.70 million euros. In the same period of 2010, Romania's food products trade deficit totaled 700.18 million euros. According to MADR data, the exports on intra and extra EU markets were dominated by maize, which brought Romania over 206.03 million euros for the amount of 665,348.6 tons, compared to the same period in 2010, when 111.16 million euros were cashed for 570,807 tons. Although the amount of corn exported this year is not much higher than last year, earnings were nearly double due to increased world prices for this product, from about 190 dollars per tonne to over 270 dollars / ton . Also, export of cigars, cigarillos and cigarettes - 10,464 tons - brought 173.71 million euros by the end of May 2011. Third place was occupied by the exports of sunflower seeds, which brought revenues of 157.4 million euros for a quantity of 305,711 tons. This year, grain exports were favorable to Romanian producers, as prices have increased significantly on the world market compared to last year. As regards imports, sugar cane or sugar beets took first spot in the first five months, with a quantity of 181,790 tons, worth 101.86 million euros, followed by sunflower seeds, about 167,269 tons imported, worth 98.39 million euros. Also, about 59,446 tons of fresh, chilled or frozen pork meat was brought from intra and extra-community markets in the first five months of the year, worth 92.5 million euros and corn imports totaled 73 million euros for 222,654 tons. During that period there were also imports of wheat and meslin (wheat mixed with rye at a rate of 2 / 1 - editor's note), about 222 468 tons worth 59.48 million euros, and of food products in almost the same value, namely 59.42 million euros, in 2011. Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara believes that Romania can become one of the countries exporting food products and cereals and could re-enter the European market with vegetables and fruits, as it was in 1970-1980. 'In terms of exports, I would like Romania not to discuss of a simple domestic market, but Romania should be present on the international market with agricultural products. To enter the club of wheat exporters is not an easy job, worldwide. This is a club formed in over 100 years, with exporting countries and consuming countries. Romania was usually an exporting country, with interruptions following foolish agricultural policies. We could re-enter the European market with vegetables and fruit, as in the years 1970-1980 ', Valeriu Tabara recently said. He stressed the importance of attracting European funds to agriculture, saying that the good results in agriculture this year were also due to the European funding.
