SPRM: The Rosia Montana project gives a chance to the mining community in the Apuseni Mountains
ACTMedia - 29 August 2011
The Group for the Support of the Rosia Montana Project (SPRM) through the means of 50 members representing NGOs, townhalls in the Alba and Hunedoara counties, universities, as well as employers' associations and trade unions organizations representative at the local level, support the starting of the gold project from Rosia Montana for the economic relaunching of the Apuseni.
' The mining investment proposed for Rosia Montana with potentially direct impact of 19 billion dollars in the Romanian economy brings a package of modern and efficient solutions to the economic and social issues of our region and Romania in general. The reality of Rosia Montana is: underdeveloped area, mining only industry, unemployed population – 80% who live at the limit of subsistence, with youth lacking any perspective' a press release of the organization says. The GPSRM representatives appreciate as ' worrying' the actions of misinformation started through the means of campaigns, and at the same time, appreciate the considerations which president Traian Basescu made in a televised interview.
'We express our worry and indignation towards the extent of the misinformation actions practiced by the organizations involved in campaigns against the economic development of Rosia Montana and the surrounding communities. At the same time, we hail the statements for support of the mining project in Rosia Montana made by the president of Romania (..) The mining project is the only hope for a better life of the people in Rosia Montana and in the whole area of the Apuseni. (..) We expect the decision to start the project to give a chance to the mining communities in the Apuseni, to relaunch mining in Romania which would lead to the creation of new work places and the increase of investment' the document says.
Last week, president Traian Basescu stated that he had always supported the mining project in Rosia Montana mentioning that Romania needs such a plan, with the condition that the sharing conditions be renegotiated.
In his turn, Laszlo Borbely, the minister of environment and forests said that he would propose to the government to agree with the project Rosia Montana only if the investor observe the best practices as regards mining.
PM Boc: Rosia Montana project - a poorly closed contract for Romania
The gold mining project in Rosia Montana (western Romania) has at least two 'major issues' relating the environmental protection and the low economic benefits it brings to the Romanian state, Prime Minister Emil Boc told Radio Romania Actualitati (News) public station on Friday.
He added the Romanian state's understanding with the investors must 'certainly' be re-discussed.
'My personal viewpoint remains the same: I was not and I am not a fan of this project but, in my capacity as the Government leader, I await the specialists' official position. I believe this project has at least two major issues at this moment: an environmental one - on which I await the specialists' position - and an economic one, relating what Romania's benefit from this contract is. From the viewpoint of Romania's interest, this contract by far is poorly closed', Boc stressed.
He pointed out that the project, in its current form, cannot be promoted from an economic viewpoint.
'This contract puts the Romanian state at a disadvantage and its current form must certainly be re-discussed. But I'm going to wait for the experts' official position, given that I am no expert in this field', the Prime Minister told the public radio.
Romanian President Traian Basescu had told public television station TVR1 on Aug. 22 that he backed the Rosia Montana gold and silver mining project, given that the world gold quotations had risen abruptly.
'I think the uncertain future compels any state that can strengthen its gold reserves' to do so, Basescu had stressed.
He had announced that the Romanian gold reserve amounted to 103 tonnes at present and the open-cast mine at Rosia Montana could take this amount to 200 tonnes in the next years. Basescu had insisted the contract renegotiation was a matter of the Government and this could bring a higher percentage to the Romanian state, which currently has a 4 percent royalty of the Rosia Montana project.
