ACTMedia - 7 Septembrie 2011
The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest is pleased to announce that it will open the doors at its new location at 4-6 Bulevardul Dr. Liviu Librescu, Sector 1, Bucharest, on September 14, a press release sent by the US Embassy informs.
The 4.5 hectare site is located just north of the Baneasa mall and adjacent to beautiful Tunari Forest.
The main phone numbers for the embassy will remain the same. The current U.S. Embassy at 7-9 Tudor Arghezi will close at 5:00 pm on September 7 to facilitate the move to the new facility, reopening for full services to the public on September 14. During the period of the move, Emergency American citizen services will be available by contacting the embassy at: 021-200-3300.
The street location of the new embassy is named in honor of Dr. Liviu Librescu, a distinguished Romanian-American scientist, professor, and Holocaust survivor. During the Virginia Tech massacre in April 2007, Dr. Librescu gave his life for his students, heroically holding off the gunman to allow his students to escape.
Green Design Reduces Environmental Impact
The U.S. Department of State is a leader in the design and construction of green buildings. The new embassy meets the strict guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council and its Leadership in Energy and Design Program.
The embassy's design incorporates innovative technology to promote efficient water use and energy performance. Ecological paint and construction materials were used to reduce heat and chemical emissions. Approximately three quarters of the site is a green space incorporating drought tolerant species to reduce water consumption. Over 200 trees such as flowering cherry, honey locust, and weeping birch have been planted.
The building's modern design emphasizes an open floor plan to promote communication and seeks to take advantage of natural light. The RATB has placed an additional stop for the 301 bus line near the embassy to encourage the use of public transportation.
Construction Employs Romanian Materials and Workers
In accordance with U.S. law, the building was designed and constructed by a U.S. company, American International Contractors. Several prominent Romanian contractors and construction firms, such as Bog'Art, Sommering, Apolodor, CamServ, MasterBuild, Green Shop, Alusystem, NM Construct, Lafarge, Schindler-Romania helped to build the new embassy. Up to 500 Romanians worked daily on the new embassy with an impeccable safety record, directly contributing USD 60 million to the Romanian economy and employing 1,500 Romanian specialists and workers overall.
Construction Safety Record
Romanian construction companies and employees embraced a very strict safety plan working 2.2 million labor hours without a major injury. All workers were trained on the use of protective devices and followed the safety program with support from their construction companies. The safety results on this project surpassed the average for the U.S. Construction Industry. The Romanian Association for Occupational Health and Safety recognized Bog'Art with a Best Practices in Health & Safety award during a recent conference.
Artwork Emphasizes Shared Values
The embassy will feature paintings, photography and sculpture by Romanian and American artists reflecting the strong bonds of friendship between our countries. The atrium features a mural called 'Drafts and Open Windows,' a project of the Art in Embassies program that is a collaboration between U.S. artist Maggie Michael and Romanian artists.
