Eurostat: Romania registers slightest economic growth in EU in Q2, compared with Q2 of 2010

Romania registered the slightest economic growth among the European Union member states in the second quarter of 2011 compared with the similar period of 2010, according to the second estimation released on Tuesday by the European Office for Statistics (Eurostat).
While the European Union registered a 1.7 percent economic growth and the euro area advanced 1.6 percent annually, Romania's GDP witnessed only a 0.3 percent increase in the second quarter of 2011 compared with the similar period of 2010. A weaker performance than that of Romania was registered in Portugal, a country where the GDP registered a 0.9 percent annual decline. Greece has not sent the data on the economic developments in Q2 of 2011 to Eurostat.
According to Eurostat, the economies of the Baltic countries registered the highest annual increases, Estonia, with 8.4 percent, Lithuania, with 6.2 percent, and Latvia, with 5.7 percent.
Referring to the data on the GDP evolution in the second quarter of 2011 compared with the previous three months, both the European Union and the euro area registered a quarterly 0.2 percent growth, similar to that witnessed by Romania. Moreover, four EU member states registered a quarterly 0.2 percent GDP increase: Romania, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Great Britain. The highest quarterly GDP increase was registered by Latvia (2.2 percent), while in France, Hungary and Portugal economy stagnated.
