Deloitte: Romania's weight increases in ranking of top 500 Central European businesses

Romania's weight in the annual ranking by Deloitte Central Europe of the top 500 Central European companies has increased from 6 to 8 percent, that is from 33 companies in 2010 to 38 companies in 2011.

The aggregate volume of the revenues reported by the biggest Romanian companies stood at 37.49 billion euros in 2010.

The ranking of Romania's biggest companies is still dominated by the energy industry and resources (14), followed by the consumer goods industry (12), the manufacturing industries (5), telecommunications (6) and the pharmaceuticals industry (1).

'It is interesting to note that Romania has eight new companies in this year's ranking that are operating in various industries - three in the energy industry and resources, two in the manufacturing industries, two in the consumer goods industry and one telecom operator,' Deloitte Romania Chairman George Mucibabici says.

He says of all the top Romanian companies, 71 percent reported larger revenues in 2010 than in 2009, and 26 percent posted falling revenues. Among the top 10 ones, eight recorded a rise in the ranking and there is also a new entrant.

On the other hand, Mucibabici says 2010 was a break time for all the Central European companies after their focus in 2008 and 2009 on cost cuts to improve efficiency. 'As a result, almost 80 percent of the top 500 companies reported rising revenues in 2010, compared with just 16 percent having done so in 2009,' Mucibabici explains.

The Central European companies posted aggregate revenues of 612.14 billion euros, up 14.2 percent year-over-year, compared with an over 21-percent drop in 2009.

The ranking drawn up annually by Deloitte Central Europe is in its 5th edition this year. It takes into account the business turnover reported by the companies for the preceding calendar year.

Deloitte services include audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk management and tax.
