Finland joins Holland in officially opposing Romania’s accession to Schengen area
ACTMedia - 21 Septembrie 2011
Finland voted, next to Holland, against the accession of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area, Brussels sources declare. The decisive vote will be held in the European Council on 22 September.
As in Holland's case the stand is determined by constrictions in domestic policy, the new Helsinki government (in office since June 2011) having a pronounced Euro-skeptic approach.
Moreover, Finland's decision was influenced by Holland's massive lobby, which tried to avoid isolation among member states.Mention should be made that the access of the Party of True Finnish (populist) in the Finnish Parliament triggered the Euro-skeptic movement in Helsinki. As a result of popular pressure, the Helsinki government insisted that allocating financial assistance for Greece should be conditioned by the inclusion in the 'Greek package' of collateral guarantees to cover risks coming from guarantees of ESFS member states.
