INOE opens Norway-sponsored 3D research observatory
ACTMedia - 29 Septembrie 2011
The National Optoelectronics Research and Development Institute (INOE) on Wednesday opened the Romanian Atmosphere Observatory (RADO), a leading South-Eastern European low atmosphere research centre, in Magurele, near Bucharest City.
RADO was established under a 2.8-million-euro project funded under the Norwegian Cooperation Programme for Economic Growth and Sustainable Development, co-funded by Romania's National Scientific Research and Development Authority.
Attending the opening ceremony were Norway's ambassador in Bucharest Oystein Hovdkinn, Project Officer with the European Directorate General for Scientific Retrench of the European Commission Ciaran Dearle, alongside foreign and Romanian experts on air quality research and climate change.
The aim of the RADO project is to contribute to the establishment of an infrastructure comprising a 3D atmosphere observatory able to combine research, education and applied practice activities. The Romanian Atmosphere Observatory is a leading world research centre that has state-of-the-art equipment. The data it collects will be made available to the research networks all around the world. RADO will become an active centre for the implementation of new projects designed to explore atmospheric phenomena and the interaction between the atmosphere and the Earth, hydrosphere and biosphere.
The project was worth 2.87 million euros, with Romania having contributed15 percent of the total value. There are currently air quality measurement stations in Cluj, Iasi, Timisoara and Baneasa that supply data to RADO.
