The multinationals leave at the first signal of insecurity

The state should support Romanian entrepreneurs equally as they encourage multinational investment on the local market, which are opportunist and at the first sign of insecurity move their factories to other countries, Cristian Nacu, partner in Entreprise Investors (EI) said, quoted by wall-street.ro.
'The multinationals come and go as their interest dictates, it is good for the state to encourage these investments and to get into the race for drawing foreign investments with the other countries of the region, but at the same time, the state should help entrepreneurs in Romania. They assume the risk, they are inventive, they bring added value. The multinationals are opportunistic investors, and they run as soon as they find something insecure' Nacu said on Monday, at the launching of the project ' Champions in Business' which proposes the promotion of local entrepreneurship.
According to the most active private equity fund in Romania, it is not the government's fault that multinationals, more exactly Nokia, leave Romania as it was not the fault of the German government that the Finnish company closed down the German factory to open one in Romania. ' The only thing is that the authorities have to help small and medium-sized companies including with the recovering of the VAT money by eliminating bureaucratic barriers. The elimination of some bureaucratic barriers in the relation with the small companies would help a lot. The small companies can wait for the state to give them the money back, as they don't have it. They don't need facilites, they need normality' Nacu said.
Nacu says that, as a total, the companies where Entreprise Investors invested in Romania have 4,500 employees and a turnover of one billion euro. In the Entreprise Investors portfolio there are Macon Deva, Smartree, Profi, Siveco, the investments of the fund in Romania going up to 200 million euro.
In her turn, Irina Anghel, the chairman and founder of the association Triple Helix, with which Entreprise Investors undergoes the project 'Champions in Business' appreciated that Romania needs another support engine of the economy, which could be local entrepreneurs.
'We have overcome the period when we thought the state is that engine, then we realized that multinationals do not represent the solid anchor for the support of the economy. The local entrepreneurs represent the renewable source of the economy, it contributes to the GDP growth, through innovation and flexibility, adaptability. At the same time, they have a social advantage, through the creation of work places, by the absorption of the people without jobs in the case of multinationals withdrawal' Anghel said
She explained that in Romania there is an imbalance between the role and the perception of entrepreneurs, as it is clear from a study made by Gallup. According to the study, in the US 59% of the Americans consider that new entrepreneurs create products and services for everybody's good, while in Romania the percentage is only 14%, less than the EU average of 21%. On the other hand, only 20% of the Romanians consider that entrepreneurs are creators of work places, while the EU average is 30% and in the US it is 60%. At the same time, there is a big difference in Romania between the desire to work on one's own and the putting into practice of this desire, and the element which ' paralyses' the potential of entrepreneurs is the absence of financial resources.
