Survey: Economic crisis did not cause Romanians working abroad to come back home massively
ACTMedia - 6 Octombrie 2011
The economic crisis has not caused a massive wave of Romanian people who work abroad coming back, and those who returned are here most likely for a limited period only, according to the survey 'The impact of the economic crisis on the migration of the Romanian labour,' launched on Tuesday, October 4 by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung foundation.
'In spite of the economic crisis that hit the Western European countries, the opportunities on the labour market are in greater number there than in Romania, anyway. In fact, the number of those who declare themselves as lacking any migration experience and who say they want to leave to work abroad is almost three times higher than the number of those coming back home, indicating furthermore that the economic crisis increased migration, while the return phenomenon was limited. Besides, in the context of the crisis in Romania, the migration prospect along with that of finding a job abroad becomes a necessity for most Romanian people, the only possible alternative for a decent life and not an option due to lack of opportunities,' the survey reveals.
'Most of those who came back were looking for work the moment the survey was conducted and only a small percentage found a job. Many of the latter, however, deem the new job as inferior to that they had abroad, especially in terms of remuneration,' the document reads.
The option of the migrants to return to Romania for good by opening a business is not valid, as those who voice their intention to do so are relatively few (17 percent) and the number of those who have already opened such a business is too small for a statistics to be made, reads the material elaborated by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung foundation.
