Head of Bilderberg Group: We don't try to create the United States of Europe
ACTMedia - 17 Octombrie 2011
The idea of a minister of finances at European level or an entity of united European states is not good, Greece must be saved from bankruptcy and be kept in the euro zone, to avoid what could happen to the Greek state to happen to another state, Etienne Davignon, the chairman of the Bilderberg group said on Friday in a conference organized by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
Governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Mugur Isarescu invited the Chairman of the Bilderberg Group Etienne Davignon at a conference on the European Union after the sovereign debt crisis, hosted by the BNR. On this occasion, davignon presented a series of solutions through which the European Union could pass easily over the crisis of sovereign debt.
'Personally I don't believe in the idea of a finances minister at European level, not even for a second, as it is in contradiction with the concept we have. What is the concept? The concept is to keep states, nations and not to be replaced by the EU. It might happen, I don't know over 100 years. We don't try to create the United States of Europe' Davignon said.
He did not exclude that in the future the United States of Europe might work, but he admitted that at present there are ' sovereignity division' underway. 'This does not mean that in the future there might not be the United States of Europe, but now what we do is to share sovereignity and we decide to have a series of issues which we could not decide at individual level as a country, but at a collective level. And, of course, we should decide through a majority of votes' Davignon said.
'When you have a common currency you must understand it belongs to everybody. The Greek story should end, but with Greece in the euro zone. If the reaction is not a strong one, this might happen to other states as well', Davignon said.
According to him, Europe has a deep crisis of sovereign debts, which was extended due to the issues in Greece, as well as due to the fact that the member states of EU opposed the European Commission proposal who suggested to send some auditors to check the financial situation of each state separately. In the conference, there was discussion about the populism which is felt in the EU states due to politicians who use the crisis to promote their electoral interests.
He added that the next step after the solution of the Greek problem is finding solutions for the consolidation of economic growth in the EU. 'The model of European integration is unique. If doesn't function, the signal will be very negative for the whole world. If we fail, we will take the hope from the others' Davignon said, referring to the process of globalization.
Accompanying Davignon in Bucharest is Richard Haas, Chairman of the US Council on Foreign Relations, an independent reflection organisation touted as an indispensable resource in a complex world that has a 4,500-strong membership, including Brian Wiliams, Fareed Zakkaria, Angelina Jolie, and Chuck Hagel.
According to Richard Haass, the chairman of the Council for Foreign Relations, an independent organization, the present issues are not institutional, but they belong to the political area. 'For me, the only question is if the political moves quickly enough. Until now, it has been surpassed by the economic evolution' Haass said.
He added that the populism promoted by politicians does not surprise anybody, but its promotion had as an effect the drop in living level and the increase in social inequity. Asked about the institutional regulation, Haass showed his worry that at least the US had the danger of overcrowding, which could slow down the economic growth over the next 5-10 years. 'You don't want to repair something which is not broken, and this is the danger' he said.
