ACTMedia - 17 Octombrie 2011
Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Greece and Bulgaria, Teodor Baconschi, Stavros Lambrinidis and Nickolay Mladenov, sent a common letter to Commissioner for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy Stefan Fule on Friday, October 14 and to European Commissioner for regional policy Johannes Hahn, with the proposal to create a strategy for the Western Balkans.
According to a press release sent on Friday by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the letter appeals to continue the expansion policy of the European Union, in spite of the major issues Europe is facing. 'The expansion proved to be the most useful instrument in guaranteeing a safe and stable milieu to ease the democratic reforms as well as the economic development,' the letter reads.
The strategy for the Western Balkans wants speed up the local reforms to ensure the states in the region will join the European Union, observing all the established criteria. Romania, Greece and Bulgaria deem that the strategy should aim at three major targets for the region: adoption of the European standards, promoting economic projects and ensuring a real result-oriented regional cooperation.
According to the quoted source, the commitment of the three states in the region to the European future of the Western Balkans states is the result of the good trilateral cooperation. The document reflects the common interest in providing a stable neighbourhood and the availability to provide necessary help to the South-East European states, so that the road to the EU should be speedy.
The Romanian-Greece-Bulgarian measure comes in the same week when the European Commission (EC) released the Package 2011 regarding the expansion of the EU, including vital recommendations on continuing the expansion, especially for Serbia and Montenegro, reads the MAE release.
