Romania's balance of payments, 3.79 billion-euro deficit in nine months

The current account of Romania's balance of payments totaled 3.795 billion euros in the first nine months of 2011, decreasing 10.8 percent compared with the same period of 2010, following the 13.2 percent reduction in the trade balance deficit and the 8.7 percent increase in the current transfer surplus (based on the net transfers of the public administration), the National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Tuesday.
'The current account deficit in the period January-September 2011 was 31 percent financed through direct investments of non-residents in Romania, accounting for 1.175 billion euros, dropping 54.1 percent from the period January-September 2010, out of which the equity stakes consolidated with the estimated net loss amounted to 943 million euros and the intra-group loans to 232 million euros,' BNR points out.
The medium and long-term external debt stood at 75.292 billion euros on September 30, 2011 (76.9 percent of the total external debt), increasing 3.3 percent from December 31, 2010.
The short-term external debt on September 30, 2011, accounted for 22.642 billion euros (23.1 percent of the total external debt), 15.8 percent higher compared with that of December 31, 2010.
The medium and long-term external debt service ratio stood at 26.1 percent in the period January-September 2011, as against 33.4 percent in 2010. The goods and services imports cover stood at 7.8 months on September 30, 2011, compared with 8.6 months on December 31, 2010.
