Non performing loans ratio in banking system increases to 14.18%

The non performing loans (NPL) ratio for credit institutions registered in Romania, per total system, reached 14.18 percent at the end of the third quarter 2011, compared to 11.67 percent, on September 30, 2010, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) data reveal.
Outstanding and doubtful loans, per total loan portfolio (net), represented 2.45 per cent, per total system, and in total bank assets accounted for 1.64 percent.
Total net assets held by the banking system stood at 343.9 billion lei (about 80 billion euros) on September 30, 2011, compared to 326 billion lei at the end of third quarter 2010, down by 17.9 billion lei.
On September 30, 2011, 92.7 percent were balance sheet assets of the credit institutions with private capital or majority private capital (including foreign bank branches), and 84.6 percent were balance sheet assets of credit institutions with foreign capital or with majority foreign capital (including branches of foreign banks).
Total loans in lei rose, in December, to 81.821 billion lei (plus 0.21 percent as compared to the previous month), of which 44.745 billion lei contracted by economic agents and 35.035 billion lei by the population.
Foreign currency loans totaled 143.34 billion lei (minus 0.63 percent), of which 72.348 billion lei contracted by economic agents and 69.495 billion lei by the population.
Overdue debts of the population and in the corporate area had reached 9.296 billion lei on December 31, 2011, down 2.23 percent, compared to November 2011.
Outstanding foreign currency debts were over 12.033 billion lei (denominated), down 2.85 percent.
