BNR announces reference interest of 7.50% per year for January 2008

The reference interest rate has maintained at the same level as the one of December 2007 at 7.50% per year, BNR announced on its web page.
In January 2008 the level of the reference interest rate is 7.50% per year and the BNR decision is according to the bank statute and takes into consideration macroeconomic and monetary evolutions. BNR started again to attract the excess of cash in deposits with fix interest, equal to that of monetary policy, while for 11 weeks it attracted this money to interest rates that varied from bank to another. Compared to the last part of last year, when it used a key interest to pay excess lei attracted in deposits for a month, the bank preserves now the money in two week deposits. The Administration Board of BRD established for February to reduce by 0.75% the monetary policy interest rate from 8.75 to 8% per year. On 26 March the interest dropped again and the annual key interest was 7.50%, while in May the interest dropped to 7.25% per year. On 25 June BNR reduced it for the fourth time to 7%. At the last 2007 meeting of the central bank board the key interest was increased to 7.5% and later to 8% in January.
