EBRD to support Romania's efforts to boost economy

The European Bank for reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is determined to support Romania in improving its economic development, competitiveness, potential to create jobs and integration of economy's regions, EBRD President Jean Lumierre said in an interview for 'The Report: Romania 2008' published by Oxford Business Group (OBG).

The bank is committed to attracting intelligent investment, both funds and business expertise, EBRD official said in the Report, the first direct foreign investment guide in the country's emergent economy, which represents various faces of Romania, including macroeconomy, infrastructure, political environment, banking system and sectorial development.EBD is ready to offer higher risk instruments to support restructuring, consolidation and expansion of local companies, Lamierre said. He underscored that a bank's crucial role in the post-accession period is to support the field of emergent and entrepreneurial medium and small sized enterprises (IMMs), from the country's rural areas.A bigger number of loans for the IMMs will stimulate the setting up of new businesses and will create jobs and support the economic growth. The bank will also provide considerable support to the private field helping Romanian companies to expand abroad, Lamierre said.He mentioned that Romania needed an accelerated infrastructure development to support a supplementary economic growth and EBRD worked in partnership with the municipalities to improve services.Another important field in which the bank will work closely with the Romanian authorities is the energetic efficiency, a priority for Romania and the EBRD. Lamierre underscored that Romania and the EBRD are working together to promote a sustainable market so that the energetic efficiency should lead to the development of the renewable energy sources and a cut in carbon dioxide emissions.
