Franchises, turnover of 1.5bn euros in 2008

The number of the franchise networks in Romania reached 350 in 2007, up 20% versus 2006, and the turnover of the sector may reach this year the value of 1.5bn euros, according to the CHR Consulting estimates.

'In terms of total number of brands in franchise, Romania is close to the neighboring countries, such as Hungary (360 concepts), Greece (462), and to far-away countries, such as Portugal (350), Morocco (360) and Sweden (350), with the franchise market being in the making,' Razvan Blid, managing partner CHR Consulting told the Capital magazine. The specialists' estimates for this year are moderate - due to the lack of adequate retail spaces - despite the fact 20 openings of malls are scheduled nationwide. The total turnover of the local franchise market is estimated to slow down by 10% - 15% its growth rate in 2008, mainly the retail franchise. Last year, this was the field with the biggest growth, with more than 20 new entries in Romania. 'The infusion of over 20 new international brands represents an investment of over 3.5 million euros and over 250 new jobs,' says the CHR representative. The expansion plans of businesspeople include also growth forecasts. Thus, Octavian Radu, founder and the majority shareholder of RTC, intends to increase the shares of franchises in his own businesses. 'The franchise with Debenhams has unfolded very well and I am convinced that as Romania advances economically and we become cosmopolite, the western systems and ideas will have increasingly bigger success here', he said. Gergana Diaconu, general manager of Versace Jeans Romania, says she wants to expand. 'The brands expect us to make them the right offers, but for there are not the right circumstances for the time being', she says, referring to the absence of quality shopping spaces. 'The conditions for obtaining a franchise are very tough, in the sense that the space has to be in central areas, and the architecture and furniture have to meet their standards,' says Gergana Diaconu about Versace's entry in Romania.
