Romania registers 1.7 billion euro deficit in agricultural trade

Romania registered over the first 10 months of 2007 a deficit of 1.7 billion euros in the agricultural trade with the EU and non EU states, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development told Rompres.

Imports exceeded 2.59 billion euros, while exports reached only 902 million euros. The main imported product is the pork meat, with 157,411 tonnes, worth of 263 million euros, followed by chicken meat worth of 124.2 million euros, food products of 120 million euros and sugarcane worth of 105.7 million euros. Romania exported tobacco products worth of 108.9 million euros, living animals of the bovine species, worth of 74 million euros (41.549 tonnes), sunflower seeds (82.8 million euros), rape seeds (68 million euros) and corn (60 million euros). The agricultural deficit in 2006 reached 1.57 billion euros, up 16.5 percent as against 2005, imports reaching 2.4 billion euros.
