ARIS Deputy Chair Barbuletiu on support for large investment projects in Romania
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 6 Februarie 2008
After Romania's accession to the European Union on January 1, 2007, foreign investors have started mustering confidence and investors that would avoid Romania previously and those not flexible enough to invest in an Eastern European country have started coming to Romania, Deputy Chair of the Romanian Foreign Investment Agency (ARIS) Monica Barbuletiu told daily Financiarul in an interview carried on Tuesday.
As economic growth has been strong over the past years and accession to the EU has inspired very much trust, very large investment projects started pouring into Romania.
ARIS is providing assistance to all investors, said Barbuletiu, adding that greenfield projects are more interested.
'We are very much interested in investment projects that will import state-of-the-art technology in Romania, and the arrival of such projects means investors are perceiving legislative stability,' the ARIS official said.
Finnish Nokia company, which one year and a half ago started an investment project at Jucu, Cluj County, were granted and are still granted full support from ARIS and local authorities, said Barbuletiu. The attractiveness of Cluj County with foreign investors is all the more obvious, as the local industrial park is permanently expanding on increasing demand. Besides the central county of Cluj the eastern city of Iasi and the southern city of Craiova are turning into very attractive destinations for foreign investors, and so does the southern city of Ploiesti, which is benefiting from closeness to the capital city of Bucharest. The western cities of Timisoara and Arad continue as top destinations, while Bucharest City will continue to be the most sought-after business target for investors.
The ARIS official also said that ARIS will try to channel foreign investment into less developed areas in 2008.
'We want to mobilise local authorities into building industrial parks. Under the legislation in force, some 22 industrial park titles are to be granted throughout 2013, and industrial parks will be 40 ha wide each, on the average,' said Barbuletiu.
Also in 2008, an investment law will be worked out as a framework normative act that will comprise all the incentives awarded to both Romanian and foreign investors.
