EBRD might launch lei-denominated bond issue on Romanian market
ACT Media – news agency - 11 Februarie 2008
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) might launch in the first part of the year a bond issue denominated in lei, EBRD president Jean Lemierre told a press conference on Thursday.
“We want to support increasingly more projects in lei in Romania. We discussed yesterday with government representatives and hope to hit as soon as possible the Romanian capital market as partners,” Lemierre said. In his opinion, project financing in lei renders the capital market more transparent, but also reduces potential risks related to the devaluation of foreign currencies. Lemierre did not mention a figure, but let understand that the value of the issue will not be very high. “I do not believe we should start with high-value operations. We haven’t yet decided the sum,” Lemierre explained. The major investment areas envisaged by EBRD on the Romanian market are energy, infrastructure and food production. Of recent, EBRD has financed three banks in Romania, to support credits to energy sector operations. EBRD director for Romania, Claudia Pendred, stated recently that the institution’s priorities in Romania in the coming period will focus on the supply of higher-risk instruments such as participation in the capital of local enterprises, the continuation of support for the development of microenterprises and SMEs in Romania’s rural areas, as well as cooperation with the European Union with a view to improving water supply and sewage services, waste water treatment and transportation services all over the country.
With investments worth 3.6 bln euro in 245 projects, EBRD is the largest institutional investor in Romania. Alongside its many partners, the bank has mobilized over six billion euro for projects carried out in Romania.
