Project to recover tourism in Mamaia

The Local Council of the Constanta Black Sea Municipality at the weekend okayed a feasibility study for a project concerning the planning of a small lake-locked town on the Siutghiol Lake.

The islet's project has been carried out by the architects working for House Consult, the winner of a tender for the project, assisted by professors and local environment officials. According to the project, the initial bottoming solution based on pillars set at the bottom of the lake to keep hanging the buildings to be erected over the lake has been abandoned, and preference was given to perimeter dams. Experts have found an original solution to preserve the chemical composition of the lake's water, namely the isle that is to cover 4 hectares will be made of the materials dredged from the bottom of the lake, which means 400,000 cu.m of deposits. The step was also required for economic reasons, as it curbs the building costs considerably. The Environment Ministry's approval for the project is currently pending. Constanta City Mayor Radu Mazare says the isle will be an attraction as it is here that the whole nightlife of Mamaia sea resort will concentrate. This way, another problem of the Romanian seashore resorts, namely noise, would be solved. Last summer, some hundred terraces and nightclubs' owners were fined because they had failed to put off the music after 1 A.M, as the law requires. The investment is expected to reach 50-60 million euros, Mayor Mazare believes. So far, two Spanish companies have displayed interest in carrying out the investment in partnership with the Constanta City Hall. The isle is to look like a maple leaf, and a 600-meter long catwalk will connect it to the Mamaia resort.
