Erste Bank seeks BCR CEO candidates

Aspirants may include Misu Negritoiu, General Director of ING Bank Romania, and Dan Pascariu, Chairman of the UniCredit Tiriac Bank Board of Directors. None of them admitted they are on the CEO list.

The controlling stockholder in the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR), Erste Bank, is going through the process of selecting candidates for the post of BCR CEO. The aspirants deemed most suitable for the job will be picked on the basis of their CVs and references, ‘Ziarul Financiar’ (ZF) daily writes, quoting banking sources as saying. BCR is currently run by interim CEO Manfred Wimmer, a former Erste strategy director who replaced the former BCR CEO, Nicolae Danila. The timeframe of the interim ship has not been clearly set, and ZF quoted banking sources as saying Wimmer would not be eager to get a full mandate at BCR for personal reasons. Actually, Wimmer himself confirmed that officials with the Austria-based bank are looking for a permanent successor to Danila. Despite the sources saying Misu Negritoiu, General Director of ING Bank Romania, and Dan Pascariu, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at UniCredit Tiriac Bank, are on the candidates list, none of them would confirm the allegations. Negritoiu for example said it is all “market grapevine he could not feed,” re-asserting his intention to wrap up his banking career at ING Bank Romania, where he is half-way through a development plan slated to peak in 2009. Pascariu, too, denied being a contender, as he is keen to stay at UniCredit Tiriac Bank, adding that him being a corporate banker does not necessarily mesh well with the needs of a bank such as BCR set to increase the share of its retail operations. Sorin Popa, the architect of the expanded BRD retail network, is also eyed for the job. However, Wimmer said the new CEO should not necessarily be Romanian, as some market views hold a foreign bank new to the system and with no connections to local interests as a better choice.
