Muntenia remains champion of greenfield investments
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 20 Februarie 2008
Muntenia (historic region situated in the south of the country) is the champion of greenfield investments in Romania, even if the fame of Nokia has propelled Transylvania (central region) in the ranking of 'hot' areas in Europe.
The projects developed in Muntenia total over 1bn euros, out of which 616 million euros represent the investments drawn by the 12 active industrial parks. With investments of 370 million euros, the Ploiesti industrial park tops the ranking of greenfield investments in Romania.
Ranking 2nd is Tetarom Industrial Park, with the famous locality of Jucu near Cluj-Napoca (centre), where Nokia chose to relocate its Bochum factory (Germany). The coming of the Finnish company has brought a total investment inflow of 120 million euros. The Finnish company and its direct suppliers' participation to the capital was added to 123 million euros already invested in the Tetarom park, which has come to post total greenfield investments of 243 million euros.
However, the hierarchy may change in the near future. Slatina (south), where the biggest aluminium maker in Europe is based, may become the area with the biggest greenfield projects in Romania. The coming of the Italian group Pirelli, which has developed there a tyre factory and a production unit of metallic cords, for which it has already spent 235 million euros, made the southern region of Oltenia known. This region may change the relevant ranking if the plans of the Pirelli managers are implemented. Thus, they are thinking to relocate there several activities of the group, for which they are ready to invest up to 750 million euros.
Three industrial parks are currently operating in Oltenia: at Craiova, Sadu Bumbesti-Jiu and Corabia, where the greenfield investments total only 3.5 million euros.
The most surprising conclusion of the survey that Saptamana financiara conducted regarding the greenfield investments is that the regions of Moldova (north-east) and Dobrogea (south-east) practically do not exist on the investment agenda.
With only five industrial parks and greenfield investments of only 125 million euros, the two regions are the least attractive from the viewpoint of the investors present in Romania.
Dobrogea, wit two industrial parks - at Mangalia and Navodari - drew insignificant greenfield investments: 100,000 euros at Mangalia and some 1 million euros at Navodari.
Moldova has only three industrial parks - one at Botosani, one developed on the industrial platform of Ceahlaul Piatra-Neamt plant and one at Galati, developed on the principle of free-trade area.
Banat (west) is well-represented on the map of greenfield investments, with a total volume of some 300.6 million euros. Most of the investments are based at Timisoara and Arad, where Continental and Delphi built new factories for which they spent 240 million euro and 50 million euros, respectively.
