Students generate 300-million-euro business for banks

Students generate 300-million-euro business for banks and the first five banks have already started contacting young people aged between 17 and 25.
According to statistical data, there are about 3.6 million young people and every one of them spends 80 euros a month on average. The financial products and services bankers offer them include credit cards, loans but also saving services.
The last to join this market was the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR), the largest bank in Romania according to its assets, which has even created a section devoted to students on the bank's Internet site, BCR Student Club.
The Romanian Development Bank (BRD), which is controlled by the French with the Societe Generale, the second most important player on the banking market, has three offers for students and has the most marked bent for students of all the local loan granting institutions. The bank offers a 12,000-euro credit to entirely cover the tuition fees and even offers an up to two years' grace period.
Moreover BRD offers lower admission charges to the museums, restaurants and shops in Romania and in another 135 states. Everything for 'special' interests, say the bank officials.
Raiffeisen Bank, the third largest bank in point of the value of its assets, carries out an annual scholarship programme, the number of young people benefiting from this programme being about 40.
Transilvania Bank, the forth largest player on the banking market, offers loans to the young people who want to go on studying, the maximum amount to be lent is 10,000 dollars (or its equivalent) and the money must be given back within five years. The interests to be paid are 15 percent a year for loans in lei and 12 percent for the ones in euros. Some of the documents the applicant must produce is the diploma and the acceptance of the higher education institute in Romania or abroad.
UniCredit Tiriac Banc too targets the student market and offers them the product that is called 'loan for your success in life.' The above-mentioned bank offers them 3,000 euros at least for ten years at most, with a 6.95 percent interest a year for loans in lei and 5.95 percent fro the ones in euros.
