Natura 2000 sites to cover 18 pct of Romania's territory

Natura 2000 sites will cover about 18 pct of Romania's territory, a percentage higher than in other states like Finland - 13 pct, Austria - 11 pct, Lithuania - 10 pct, the Czech Republic - eight pct, France - eight pct, or Poland - four pct, Lucia Ana Varga, Secretary of State with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development told a conference of experts.

'The PHARE project on the Implementation of the Natura 2000 network in Romania has identified the major problems we come against in outlining the natural sites recommended by the European Union. We have a too complicated relevant legislation that is hard to enforce. We need leaner laws,' said Lucia Ana Varga at the final conference on the project. The Natura 2000 network is supposed to cover some 20 pct of the EU territory and includes special conservation areas and special wildlife protection. Natura 2000 is a network of natural protected areas implemented across the EU, based on the Habitats Directive and Directive 78/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds. 'As far as nature conservation is concerned, structural funds available under the 2007-2013 Operational Sectoral Program for Environment stand at about 150 million euro, to which add structural funds from other activity sectors managed by other ministries,' said Lucia Ana Varga. Natura 2000 is aimed at halting the decline of biodiversity by the long-term conservation of the most valuable and endangered species and habitats in Europe. Special administration measures address the preservation of species and habitats, but also the carrying out in parallel of human activities such as agriculture, hunting, forest exploitation in what should be a 'nature-protection partnership.'
