Distrigaz Sud to import Russian gas through intermediaries until 2030
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 25 Februarie 2008
Distrigaz Sud will import gas from Russia through intermediaries until 2030, said Distrigaz Sud deputy managing director Marc Hirt; Distrigaz Sud is owned by Gaz de France (GdF).
The Distrigaz Sud representative said that the extension until 2030 of the contract between Gazprom and WIEE, under which Distrigaz Sud gets its gas supplies, clearly refers to Romania's possibility to directly import gas from Russia.
Hirt's statement comes shortly after CEO Bernard Arnaud's saying that as of 2012, when the contract between Distrigaz Sud and WIEE runs to end, Romania might have the chance to directly import from Russia, but the prerequisite for that is for Distrigaz Sud to be included in group negotiations between GdF and Gazprom writes daily Ziarul financiar.
Hirt says that GdF directly buys gas from Gazprom for French supplies. In 2005, when Gaz de France took over Distrigaz Sud, it sought the same conditions, but Gazprom did not accept and referred it to its agreed partner WIEE, wherewith it had a contract until 2012. WIEE had the obligation to observe the contract, and Gaz de France needed gas, so this is the reason why we signed until 2012, said Hirt.
Practically, the only base the French owners of Distrigaz Sud can import gas for the local market is the contract with WIEE. Even if it runs to end in 2012, the Russians already extended the contract with WIEE until 2030, which means that Distrigaz Sud will further have to buy gas through intermediaries at least until 2030, that is as long as WIEE stays Gazprom agreed partner in the relation with Distrigaz Sud.
Romania currently imports some 35 pct of the necessary gas consumption exclusively from Russia and only through intermediaries agreed by Gazprom. WIEE is controlled to an equal share by Gazprom and Germany's BASF, a group with activities in the chemical industry.
Hirt says prices for direct gas imports to France are similar to those for Romania.
