Romania, the only country in the region with foreign deficit in tourism and transport

Romania is the only country of Central and Eastern Europe which registered in the first nine months of 2007 a foreign deficit in the field of tourism and international transport, according to Eurostat figures presented on Tuesday in a seminar on economic issues, by chief economist of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Valentin Lazea.
In the aforementioned period Romania reported a deficit of 150 million euros in the tourism field, whereas Poland had a surplus of revenues worth 1.77 billion euros, the Czech Republic - 1.398 billion euros, Hungary - 1.004 billion euros, Bulgaria - 1 billion euros and Slovakia - 223 million euros.
At international transport, the balance was against unfavorable to Romania, with a deficit of 383 million euros, whereas Poland reported a surplus of revenues of 1.859 billion euros, the Czech Republic - 791 million euros, Hungary - 70 million euros, Bulgaria - 193 million euros, Slovakia - 216 million euros.
According to the BNR official, tourism and transport are fields which, on the contrary, could have poised Romania's current account deficit, however over the past years the foreign direct investments attracted in these sectors did not exceed together 0.5 percent of the GDP, whereas for instance, the real estate sector and that of financial brokerage attracted foreign direct investments of 15 percent of the GDP.
