Carrefour estimates turnover of 1bn euros in 2008

Carrefour Romania estimates 2008 turnover of 1bn euros, up almost 15% versus 2007 (866 million euros in 2007), the marketing manager of Carrefour Romania, Andreea Mihai told Rompres, while participating in the conference 'Romania - attraction point for investments or economic overheating', organized by The Economist.

'In 2007, the turnover of Carrefour rose 42,2% versus 2006. In 2008, we estimate a turnover of some 1bn euros', she explained. This year, the company intends to open 6 hypermarkets in Suceava /north/, Arad /west/, Pitesti /south/, Oradea /west/, Iasi /east/ and another one in Bucharest. The total value of the investment the company intends to make in 2008 amounts to some 120 million euros. In 2009, Carrefour intends to inaugurate at least 2 hypermarkets, one in Bucharest and one in Sibiu /centre/. At present, Carrefour has in Romania 11 hypermarkets, out of which 5 in Bucharest and 6 in the country. Recently, the company bought the supermarket chain Artima (21 supermarkets), and Andreea Mihai says the company may conduct also other takeovers. Carrefour held in 2006 some 11,9% of the Romanian modern trade in foods (which comprises hypermarkets, supermarkets and cash&carry stores). According to the representative of Carrefour, the Romanian retail market amounts to some 40bn euros. The modern trade represents some 39% of total trade in Romania, and in Bucharest it holds some 70%. The growth potential of the modern trade in Romania is up to 90% for the market to mature.
