Gaz de France, prospective candidate for a power station in Galati
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 28 Februarie 2008
Four companies, among which Gaz de France are interested to build on the platform of the steel&iron plant Arcelor Mittal Galati a power station (CET), Mayor of Galati and former manager of the iron&steel plant Dumitru Nicolae told a news conference on Wednesday.
The power station will collect and use the furnace gas and the gas coke as fuel in order to produce electricity and technologic steam.
The plant uses some 200 megawatts of electricity at present and some 140 tonnes of steam an hour. Some 150 tonnes of low-pressure steam would be necessary for the dismantling of the thermal power stations which it holds at present. A new power station would be an economical solution,'' said former manager of the plant Dumitru Nicolae.
According to him, Arcelor Mittal Galati will not give up, however, the supply from the national power grid, although it might curb the electricity consumption.
Spokesperson for ArcelorMittal Galati, Dorian Dumitrescu, confirmed for daily Business Standard that four companies were interested in the construction of a plant on the Galati-based works' platform, but he declined to provide further details. At present, ArcelorMittal Galati uses the furnace gas and coke gas for heating the ovens from the department of rolling mills, as well as for the supply of its own power stations from the platform on the iron&steel platform.
Gaz de France has been the majority shareholder of the gas distributor Distrigaz Sud since 2005. The company voiced intention to enter market of electricity production and thermal power and is one of the main finalists in the race for the recovery of CET Galati in partnership with Termoelectrica.
