Constructions, textiles and services, most affected by labor force crisis

Labor force crisis in Romania is mostly felt in constructions, textile industry and services like the hotel field and restaurants, despite a 60 percent increase in the labor force costs over January 2005-July 2007, head of the Bucharest Labor Force Agency (ANOFM) Dumitru Pelican said.

'If in the case of textiles, labor force problems are mainly related to the quality of jobs because of small salaries and high personnel fluctuations, while constructions and hotel industry are affected by the level of professional training of the available labor force,' said Pelican, who attended a meeting coordinated by Bucharest Prefect Catalin Deaconescu. Pelican highlighted the fact that , according to the studies, the main reason for the labor force crisis is immigration, with almost 3 million Romanians working abroad, followed by the poor training of graduates, competition and level of salaries. 'The labor force crisis in the above mentioned fields is felt in the entire economy. The unemployment rate in Romania stands at 4.3 percent as compared with Poland (15 percent). In Bucharest the unemployment rate is 1.8 percent, under the national average,' Pelican explained. He underscored that Romania's active population in Bucharest went up from 995,000 people on January 1, 2006, to 1,013,200 people on January 1, 2007. Among the ways to decrease the labor force deficit are, according to Pelican, a salary rise correlated with higher work productivity, bigger participation of adults in continuous vocational training and drawing young people and other persons with difficulties of integration in labor. Also, underprivileged categories such as women who interrupted work, people with disabilities, people aged over 45, people who have three years left until retirement, people with 3rd degree of invalidity and with a 4-hour working right should also be attracted on the labor market, according to Pelican.
