Building contractors start direct recruitment of foreign workers
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 17 Martie 2008
Romanian construction employers organisations and trade unions will organise this year five missions to explore the labor markets in the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey, India and Bulgaria, for direct recruitment of locals, with a view to filling the severe labor deficit that affects the Romanian building sector, daily Business Standard reports on Friday.
'Through these missions we will connect with social partners from the respective counties, employers organisations and trade unions in the building sector and we will investigate possibilities to bring worker contingents to the local market. These approaches are intended to asses the potential of the envisaged markets, whereas effective recruiting will be performed by Romanian companies,' Dan Cristescu, president of the Parity Committee for Migrant Workers - an institution that joins representatives of the Romanian Construction Contractors Association (ARACO), of the FGS Familia and 'Anghel Saligny' trade unions, told Business Standard.
The first such mission will be at mid-April in the Republic of Moldova; preliminary talks were also held with Turkish institutions to attract over 700 experts.
According to Cristescu, the Committee will talk Romanian companies demanding highly skilled workers into offering wages higher than 700 euro, a figure considerably above the average pay in Eastern Europe, that would also meet the demands of Romanian workers. Cristescu says an estimate of 5,000 workers will be recruited in the five missions, covering 10 pct of the market's demand.
At the end of 2007, ARACO assessed the workforce deficit in the construction sector at about 150,000 persons.
The local construction market advanced in 2007 by 35 pct to ten billion euro, the fastest growth pace after 1990.
