Constructor of Danube-Bucharest canal to be selected in September
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 19 Martie 2008
The tender to select the constructor to complete the works on the Danube-Bucharest canal, which were abandoned in 1990,will be held in September, after the feasibility study is updated, Transport Minister Ludovic Orban said on Tuesday.
'We hope we will be able to hold the tender for the Danube-Bucharest canal on September 1,' Orban said.
He also added that, once the technical-economic indicators are approved, there will be launched the procedure to update the feasibility study, which is to last for three or four months, and after it is completed the total cost of the works will be calculated more precisely.
According to estimates of the Administration of Navigable Canals based in Constanta, the completion of the works will need investments standing at some 450 million euros.
The Transport Minister stressed the future canal, to be 104-km long, will significantly contribute to the intensification of the traffic on the Danube, will develop the economy of the Romanian capital, and will ensure intermodal transportation and connect Bucharest to almost all the European capitals.
The works on the Danube-Bucharest Canal started in 1986, and were based on a project from 1982, with the idea existing from 1929, when the Parliament back then passed a law on the building of a canal to turn the Romanian capital into a Danube River port city.
Nevertheless, the construction works were launched only in the latest years of the communist rule in Romania, immediately after the completion of the works on the Danube-Black Sea Canal. The project had been 70 percent ready in 1989, but it was abandoned after the revolution of 1989, in 1994 having been officially put on hold.
'Due to the fact that the works were stopped 18 years ago, many of the investments back then have been damaged, and with some of the infrastructure elements having been stolen too,' the Minister said.
'The project was abandoned in a rather irresponsible manner after the revolution, with no reason existing, but today the project raised the interest of such large companies operating in the transportation field: we had at least five important companies having shown interest in completing the works at the canal,' Orban said.
According to Transport Ministry State Secretary Antonel Tanase, a private-public partnership will be chosen, with the investment to be managed by a share company.
Specialists from the Transport Ministry estimate the investment will be amortized in 15 years.
