Romania's on-line industry valued at millions of euros

Romania's on-line industry is controlled by a handful of local investors, and the on-line advertising budgets reached some 8 million euros in 2007 , having advanced 50 percent into 2008, daily Adevarul reports.

The Internet and on-line business started developing in 1998, and among the first local investor to launch profitable on-line business platforms are Orlando Nicoara, Val Voicu, Vlad Stan and Dorin Gheonea. Nicoara is now running Mediapro Interactiv, the Internet arm of the Mediapro media trust, but his involvement in the Internet industry took off with Netbridge, a company controlled by the US NCH Broadhurst investment fund, where he worked as development manager. It was at Netbridge that Nicoara set the foundations for Boom, the first on-line advertising firm in Romania. According to data with the Register of Companies, Nicoara is a shareholder in five such companies: Net Pulse, Beyond Software, Orland Interactive, Quadrant Interactive and Sports Connections Gheonea is another prominent Internet investor, a majority shareholder in Beyond Media. He is also a shareholder in White Image, a company monitoring and dispatching e-mails for the print divisions of the Mediapro, Intact and Realitatea-Catavencu media trusts, plus for the Renault, Mediagalaxy and Flanco companies. One of Gheonea's business colleagues is Vlad Stan, which worked with Vodanet for seven years, a company in which he is still holding a 40-percent stake. Stan and Gheonea worked together at Videomax, when Stan was a business partner and Gheonea managing partner. Stan's latest business is a partnership with thegroup company, via the Navidoo holding. Val Voicu has also dealings in the business. For instance, he is a shareholder, alongside the UK Delford Agency, in Bazar Publishing, the editor of Daily Business and FrontNews.ro. Although he left iMedia some two years ago for a personal project, AdEvolution, Voicu is a shareholder in Squadmedia, with 15-percent interests. Voicu is controlling more than 50 percent of AdEvolution.
