Boehringer Ingelheim targets two percent of pharmaceutical market

German Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceutical company, which conducts business worth over ten billion euros internationally, intends to reach in the next five years a market share of two percent, in Romania, doubling the current level.

Corporate affairs manager Boehringer Ingelheim Romania Dan Ionescu said last year the company ranked 28th in Romania's pharmaceutical market, but the doubling of the market share will take him to rank 15. In 2007, the company advanced around 31 percent in sales in Romania, reporting one of the highest growth paces in the group. The German producer started its activity in Romania in 1970, when it opened a small office, turned into a larger one in 1990, but with a single employee for a start. Now, Boehringer Ingelheim Romania employs 77 people, and its sales reached last year 22.4 million euros. The company invests in therapy for lung diseases, virology, oncology, metabolic, heart diseases, problems of the central nervous system, immunology and inflammation. The company's portfolio includes medicines such as Micardis (high blood pressure), Spiriva (asthma), Mirapexin (Parkinson), Movalis (rheumatism), for which prescriptions are needed, but also Mucosolvan, Dulcolax, Finalgon with which it is present in the OCT segment. In the segment of medicines for heart diseases, the largest segment of the pharmaceutical market, the company has four products. It intends to focus on this segment and on that of lung diseases in the coming years. The local pharmaceutical market last year reached six billion lei (or 1.8 billion euros), up 11.2 percent from 2006. Estimates say this year it will exceed two billion euros.
