ArcelorMittal Galati to invest 1.5 billion dollars in next five of six years

ArcelorMittal steel mill of Galati will invest 1.5 billion euros in the coming five or six years in turning the plant in eastern Romania into an excellence center for thick steel sheet, at the level of the entire ArcelorMittal Group, general manager of the company Augustine Kochuparampil said.

According to him, the company's investment plan for 2008 stands at 223 million dollars, of which 47 million dollars to be invested in the environment. 'That has been of course the easiest part, the most difficult follows, that of meeting all the commitments we have made, and all of this has to be solved until 2014. At that time all the environment installations of the company will be in line with the EU norms in the field, ' said Kochuparampil, adding that the company's environment protection installations have always been the most modern in the market. When it comes to social responsibility, the company focused, starting last year, on community development programs, with the budget for that standing at 1.5 million dollars. Last year, a common UNICEF team was made up, in a project entitled 'Friendly hospital for children', bringing together the organization's experience and the financial support of ArcelorMittal Galati. The purpose of this project is the improvement of the conditions in the maternity ward of the county hospital of Galati. The project supposes not only the upgrading of the maternity ward, but also the training of the staff taking care of the mothers. ArcelorMittal will continue a project of afforestation begun last year, when trees were planted over four hectares. Eighteen ha will be planted with trees this year. Among the social projects for 2008, Kochuparampil mentioned a program for the Children's Day and prize awarding to the high and higher school students with very good results, with 376 such prizes given last year.
