Romanian stocks close in the red following declines seen in the banking field
ACT Media – news agency - 14 Aprilie 2008
Indexes on the Bucharest stock Exchange (BSE) tumbled on closing and liquidity dried up because of the steep decline of banks' shares; some brokers blame it on speculations on the Sibiu bourse.
Liquidity stood at 20 million lei (5.4 million euros) dropping from 26.2 million lei in the previous session. “The session Friday began somewhat more optimistic but quotations slumped in the second part of the day. Apparently speculators on the Sibiu Financial and Commodities Exchange manipulate the market. They found differences between quotations on the BSE spot market and futures market in Sibiu to be opportune,” broker with IFB Finwest Liviu Mihuta told NewsIn. The main European bourses slumped too around the closing hour in Buchrest. The FTSE index in London dipped 0.97 percent to 5,907.3, the DAX index in Frankfurt lost 1.25 percent to 6,620.55 and the CAC40 index in Paris fell 1.03 percent to 4,809.4. The BET index of BSE, measuring the ten top companies on the market, lost 1.97 percent to 6,980.21 and the BET-C composite index assessing all listed shares minus investment funds lowered 1.56 percent to 4,926.32.The BET-FI index of the five financial companies SIFs dipped 1.1 percent to 52,980.21 and the ROTX index for trading blue-chips in Vienna slumped 2.08 percent to 4,926.32.“Banks lowered the most. The report from the rating agency Fitch continues to affect quotations,” Mihuta said. Fitch said Romania had one of the highest vulnerability levels to systemic risks in the banking field over 2007, because of the fast growing crediting and high volatility of the leu. Fifth lender by assets, Banca Transilvania (TLV) had the most liquid shares of 4.13 million lei and declined 2.72 percent to 0.715 lei. SIF Moldova (SIF2) cheapened 2.08 percent to 2.35 lei on deals of 3.22 million lei. SIF Muntenia (SIF4) totalized 2.36 million lei and dipped 0.63 percent to 1.59 lei and SIF Oltenia (SIF5) lost 1.74 percent to 2.82 lei. Second lender by assets, BRD SocGen (BRD) cheapened 2.84 percent to 20.50 lei. The country's largest oil company Petrom (SNP) regressed 1.15 percent to 0.43 lei. SIF Banat-Crisana (SIF1) fell 1.15 percent to 2.58 lei and SIF Transilvania (SIF3) idled at 1.47 lei. Gas operator Transgaz Medias (TGN) dipped 0.9 percent to 219 lei. Erste Bank, listed in the international tier of the BSE cheapened 1.83 percent to 149.80 lei. Shares of Oil Terminal (OIL) had the steepest decline on the market (7.75 percent), closing at 0.595 lei.
