Local leu hits best reference exchange rate yet in 2008
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 22 Aprilie 2008
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) on Monday, April 21, announced the best reference exchange rate this year for the national currency, at RON 3.5640 for 1 euro, by RON 0.04 (1.18 percent) higher than in the preceding session, Business Standard reports.
The last time the leu was this strong was on 27 December 2007. Demand for lei is higher this week, because this is tax season, people will be getting Easter bonuses, and Romanians working abroad are sending home money for Orthodox Easter. Interbank interest rates, exceeding those of the region, are also sustaining the leu.
On the foreign currency market, the leu appreciated at the start of yesterday's trading session to RON 3.5550/1 euro, dropping once again later on, in keeping with other regional currencies. By 4:30 p.m. the rate stood at RON 3.5680 - 3.5843/1 euro.
