First ten companies control 81 percent of Romanian insurance market last year

The first ten insurers in Romania controlled together over four fifths (81.3 percent) of the local insurance market at the end of last year, reads the Bucharest daily Bursa.
According to the above-mentioned newspaper, the total value of the gross subscribed general insurance premiums of the ten insurance companies amounted to 1.78 billion euros last year, that is 81.3 percent of the value of the entire market.
Last year the company Allianz-Tiriac controlled 16.92 percent of the insurance market, with a value of the gross subscribed premiums of 369.89 million euros, followed by the company Omniasig, with a 12.12 percent market share and 264.86 million euros in subscribed gross premiums.
Third came Asiban, with a 8.50 percent market share and 185.78 million euros in gross premiums, and fourth came Asirom, with 8.23 percent (180 million euros).
In the 2007 classification of the Romanian insurance companies fifth came the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR) Asigurari, with a 7.88 percent market share (gross premiums amounting to 172.23 million euros) and sixth came ING Asigurari de Viata, with 7.02 percent of the market and business amounting to 153.44 million euros.
The next places in the classification were taken by the companies Unita, with a 6.50 percent market share and 142.08 million euros in subscribed gross premiums, Generali, with a 5.24 percent market share and 114.53 million euros in subscribed gross premiums, Astra Asigurari, with a 5.12 percent market share and 112.03 million euros in subscribed premiums.
Tenth came last year BT Asigurari, with a 3.76 percent market share and 82.18 million euros in subscribed gross premiums.
As against the previous classification only three companies stuck to their position in the current classification, that is Allianz-Tiriac, the leader of the market, Generali, the eighth, and BT Asigurari, which was still the tenth.
The Romanian insurance companies last year posted a total value of the subscribed gross premiums of about 2.15 billion euros (7.17 billion lei), up by 25.16 percent as against 2006, according to the data supplied by the Insurance Supervisory Commission (CSA).
The motorcar insurance (CASCO and RCA) accounted for 57.22 percent of the market and amounted to 1.25 billion euros and the insurance of goods amounted to 256 million euros, that is, 11.7 percent of the overall local market.
As far as life insurance is concerned, the Bucharest daily Bursa reads that it totalled 447 million euros, thus accounting for more than a fifth (20.47 percent) of the insurance market.
According to the CSA estimates the damages paid last year by insurers totalled one billion euros, up by 35 percent as against 2006. About 95 percent of this sum, 950 million euros to be more accurate, came from the damages deriving from the non-life general insurance.
The per capita value of the subscribed gross premiums in Romania was 100.84 euros in 2007, up by 34.3 percent as against the previous year, when it was 75.07 euros per head.
