European companies remain interested in construction of reactors 3 and 4
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 7 Mai 2008
The project company set to build reactors 3 and 4 at Cernavoda stirred interest of some other European companies, desirous to participate even under conditions in which Nuclearelectrica would increase its share.
'There are European companies wishing to participate to the project company, which is to build reactors 3 and 4, even under current conditions in which Nuclearelectrica is seeking the majority stake, in case some investors it negotiates with would withdraw', announced on Tuesday, in a French-Romanian press conference, the company's director general Teodor Chirica.
Up to now, none of the six participants in the company - ArcelorMittal, CEZ, Electrabel, Enel, Iberdrola and RWE Power - gave no signal they would retire. They are waiting for the official document, the Government's Decision draft through which Nuclearelectrica will get the majority stake, now in the drafting stage at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
One of the reasons why it is seeking the majority stake in the project company is that the Romanian state is the one which manages the nuclear waste.
Implementation costs of the two Cernavoda nuclear reactors is estimated at 2.3 billion euros. For each reactor, the investment duration is 64 months, and starting operations is set for 2014, respectively 2015. Each of the two reactors will have an installed power of 720 MW. The units are to supply an energy quantity of 5.2 TWh, annually, each and the electricity sale price is estimated at 28.2 - 32.5 euro/MWh. Each unit's exploitation time is 30 years, with the possibility to extend it to 40 years.
At present, Cernavoda nuclear power station operates two nuclear units. The first reactor entered exploitation in 1996, and the second one attained the maximum power in September 2007, being inaugurated at the beginning of October. Together, reactors 1 and 2 account for 18 percent of the total energy generated in Romania.
