Car makers under pressure of pay rise claim
ROMPRES - Romanian News Agency - 8 Mai 2008
Car makers in Romania are facing strikes this year, having pay rises as the main claim.
Employees from Dacia car maker in Pitesti, southern Romania, were the first to go on strike, next came suppliers of components from Leoni and Cortubi companies, in Mioveni, out of Pitesti. Workers from these two companies are members of Dacia trade unions.
230 workers from Leoni, a maker of cables, went on an all-out strike on Tuesday, they claimed a 340 RON rise in salaries, while the employers offered them only 340 RON, they said. An euro is traded at 3.6506 RON. The strike continues, the strikers expect to be invited to negotiations, said top unionist Ion Iordache.
Workers from Cortubi, a maker of exhaust boxes, were on a two-hour token strike on Tuesday, they also demanded a rise in salary.
The workers from Dacia, who were on strike for three weeks, got a 23 percent rise in salary, with the employers more than doubling their initial offer.
The rise in salary in Romania, which is two-digit, is believed to be a threat to long-term stability, with advance in consumption having significantly raised the foreign deficit, daily Ziarul Financiar writes.
'We no longer are as competitive as a few years ago, and we will become less and less attractive if work force expenses go on rising significantly, ' said head of the research department of Raiffeisen Bank Ionut Dumitru.
