Romania - SABMiller's fourth best market in Europe, according to profit and sales

Last year, Romania registered the strongest growth rate for SABMiller on any European market (28 percent), the domestic market being the fourth in terms of volume and has the same profile in terms of turnover and profit, announced Alan Clark, managing director with SABMiller Europe.

SABMiller official said that it was hard to anticipate whether Romania will become one of the top three European markets, particularly because it had been outrun by Poland and the Czech Republic, countries with extremely high consumption levels, as well as by Russia, a huge market compared with the number of potential consumers. 'At any rate, we will continue to hold high expectations for the Romanian market in the future', underlined Clark, quoted by Ziarul financiar daily. He pointed out that the latest estimates point to a market growth rate of 5-6 percent this year and the plan is to outperform the market, the same as last year. 'We'll make further investments in the breweries in Buzau (east) and Timisoara (west) as the centres in Cluj (center-west) and Brasov (center) can no longer be expanded. However, we don't intend to close any of these breweries, given that we've produced below the capacity requested by the market in recent years,' SABMiller Europe manager also said.. In the wake of investments close to 100 million euros worth, in the past three fiscal years, SABMiller has managed to boost sales of the Romanian subsidiary by almost 60 percent, from 3.1 million hectolitres in 2006, to almost 5 million hectolitres last year. In 2007, Romanians consumed 20.6 million hectolitres of beer, meaning double the value posted in 1990, when the annual beer consumption per capita in Romania stood at approximately 50 liters. According to Alan Clark, 'beer consumption per capita in Romania, increased a lot, already surpassing many mature western markets, but it is due to stabilize somewhere around 95-96 liters per capita'.
